REACHing for Chemicals Management in Europe
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of
Chemicals regulation) is the
new, single regulatory system for chemicals management in the European
Union (EU). The regulation came into force June 1, 2007 and the chemical
industry – from raw materials suppliers to manufacturers, importers
and downstream users – is now in the process of pre-registration.
Deadlines for registration range between November 2010 and May 2018,
depending upon substance volume and classification.
REACH requires that EU manufacturers and importers of substances to
the EU (starting with quantities of one tonne per year) disclose
information on the properties of their substances, including the risk
to humans and the environment associated with use. Information on appropriate
risk reduction measures must also be provided.
MEGlobal fully supports the objectives of REACH and the responsibility
the legislation places on all members of the value chain to manage the
safe use of chemicals. Working with CEFIC, the European Chemical Industry
Council,
MEGlobal has been actively engaged in supporting effective and workable
legislation, and we are now shifting our attention to work with our customers
and suppliers on REACH implementation.
What does this mean for MEGlobal Customers?
Working through The Dow Chemical Company’s* (Dow) REACH implementation
program management office, MEGlobal is preparing to meet the compliance
requirements of the legislation. MEGlobal will ensure pre-registration
of its products, monoethylene glycol (MEG) and diethylene glycol (DEG),
with assistance from Dow’s corporate expertise and service functions.
MEGlobal anticipates that our current product portfolio will be registered
for typical downstream uses pending further technical guidance.
