Lacombe Athletic Park Association completes Phase 1 expansion at MEGlobal Athletic Park

LACOMBE – The Lacombe Athletic Park Association (LAPA) has completed the first phase of its expansion project with a $2-million investment to enlarge and improve its field house and other spectator facilities at MEGlobal Athletic Park in Lacombe, Alta.

Phase 1 included a doubling of the size of the field house with additional washrooms, change rooms, storage, meeting rooms, an elevator and a fully accessible viewing tower with space for media and coaches as well as timing facilities for the running track. Phase 2 of expansion will be the running track and field infrastructure.

“On behalf of the LAPA we are pleased to announce the completion of Phase 1 of our expansion plans,” said LAPA president Jay Adamson. “With the added dressing room space, washrooms, building accessibility and viewing tower, we feel we will be able to bring in larger, more diverse sporting events to Lacombe and area. We are so fortunate to have great community partners in the City of Lacombe, Lacombe County and Wolf Creek Public Schools who are in full support of the expansion phases. Of course, none of this would be possible without the strong partnership with MEGlobal and their financial commitment of $2 million dollars to our project. The citizens of Lacombe, the County and Wolf Creek students will be able to reap the benefits of the expanded park for many years to come!  We look forward to the many more events we can host and the positive economic impact the phase 1 of expansion brought to the community. Watch out for Phase 2 – Track and Field Facility development.”

Adamson also noted MEGlobal will retain naming rights to the park until 2040.

MEGlobal Vice President of Manufacturing Rocco Schurink said his company is pleased to see Phase 1 complete and ready to support expanded athletic and community events.

“We are so proud to be part of a project that will bring new opportunities to the community while enhancing the experience for players and fans alike,” he said. “It’s an honor to put our name on this facility.”

Work on Phase 1 of the MEGlobal Athletic Park expansion began in September, 2020 and created approximately 200 construction jobs over the past nine months.

Lacombe County Reeve Paula Law said Lacombe-area residents will benefit from the expansion.

“Lacombe County is an enthusiastic supporter of the Lacombe Athletic Park Association, and is very proud of the partnership we have had with them for the past many years,” she said. “We are so pleased for the LAPA on the completion of the new field house and know this amenity will enhance the sporting community in and around Lacombe for years to come.”

Grant Creasey, Mayor of Lacombe added his appreciation for the project.

“On behalf of City Council, I would like to congratulate LAPA on the completion of their stunning new fieldhouse. This facility will help the athletes of Lacombe compete and train at the highest levels. Council commends LAPA for their commitment to developing a facility where young athletes can follow their passions to the fullest extent,” he said.

Jayson Lovell, Wolf Creek Public School Superintendent, said he is also happy to see the next step for the park completed.

“Wolf Creek Public Schools congratulates the many sponsors and supporters of the LAPA Field House Expansion Project. The completion of the important project provides expanded opportunities for Lacombe and area students, athletes and the community,” he said. “All partners are to be commended for supporting this important community asset”.

An in-person celebration of the expanded facility will be held in the fall.
