Responsible Care: Codes of Practice

MEGlobal Canada ULC Indigenous Inclusion Principles

MEGlobal Canada ULC (MEGlobal, we) is proud to have a culture that promotes respect, equity, and diversity in every aspect of our operations. As a member of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), MEGlobal works to enhance our understanding and growth in our connections with Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, specifically Call to Action #92 which calls upon the corporate sector of Canada to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People as a framework to apply the principles, norms and standards of reconciliation. These principles are designed to set an expectation of our conduct and commitment to respecting Indigenous Peoples, listening to Indigenous voices and perspectives and fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous Peoples:

Principle 1: Consultation and engagement is authentic and respectful.

MEGlobal will engage in meaningful consultation and engagement with Indigenous communities that may be affected by our activities. This process, which aligns with CIAC’s Responsible Care Accountability Ethic, Principles and Codes, will be conducted in a fair and transparent manner, respecting the customs and traditions of all those involved.

Principle 2: Understanding is founded in education.

Training and education programs will be provided to help promote understanding and appreciation for the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples.

Principle 3: The community is reflected in our workforce.

MEGlobal is committed to a work environment that is equitable, rewarding and reflects a culture of inclusiveness. Connecting with the talents and skills of members of the Indigenous community provides valuable opportunities to both prospective employees and the company.

Principle 4 – Supporting Indigenous businesses benefits local economies.

We believe in the power of collaboration to create sustainable economic growth and are committed to inclusive purchasing and contracting processes.

  • Each member and partner company must commit to implementing the ethics and codes of practice of Responsible Care® within three years of joining the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC). The most senior executives of each member company meet quarterly in Leadership Groups to share problems, successes and to exert peer pressure.

The Responsible Care codes of practice relate to three key areas:

    • Operations — expectations for the safe, environmentally and socially responsible management of facilities and equipment
    • Stewardship — expectations for the development of new products and services and the responsible management of raw materials and products through their lifecycle
    • Accountability — expectations for advancing public policy to support sustainability and for understanding and responding to stakeholders’ expectations related to social responsibilities beyond those aspects related to health, safety and environment.

Full details on the codes of practice can be found on the CIAC and Responsible Care websites.
